Association of Nonmyeloablative Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation With Neurological Disability in Patients With Relapsing-Remitting Multiple Sclerosis

Among patients with relapsing-remitting MS, nonmyeloablative hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) was associated with improvement in neurological disability and other clinical outcomes. Significant improvements were seen on the multiple sclerosis functional composite (MSFC) scores that assesses leg function, arm coordination, and cognitive function; SF-36 QOL scores related to physical health, mental health, and perceived well-being; neurological function as rated on the neurological rating scale (NRS) for patients with MS; and relative functioning and disability scores on the expanded disability status scale (EDSS).

Most prevailing MS treatments target autoimmunity, but do little to promote oligodendrocyte (myelin precursor) maturation. This study supports the further testing of benztropine as it appears to reverse symptoms, reduce relapse, and allow for fingolimod (Gilenya) dosage cuts.
